Functionality Over Form, Why?

Children who are yet to start reading, navigate mobile and game console menus with ease. They quickly learn and recognise patterns. Sometimes older people, even though literate, have tough time with gadgets.

If an app is meant to be used by older people it need to be designed accordingly.

But enterprise application are used by wide range of demographics like

  • πŸ‘©β€πŸ’» Tech savvy
  • πŸ“ New to tech
  • πŸ’Ό Using data
  • πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§ Entering data
  • 🀡 Exclusive time with application
  • πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ Dealing with customers and application simultaneously
  • πŸ’» Sitting close to system
  • πŸ–₯ Moving around while using system
  • ⌨️ Frequent use
  • 🀩Rare use but provides wow factor

While designing it is important to keep this in mind. While there are common patterns that can be used across application, there is always a trade off when designing screens for particular segment of users.

It does not matter if the application scales and has tons of features. If the design does not suit the specific purpose, it gets killed immediately by users.

Thats why different enterprise apps are like apples and oranges. A design may look inspiring but may not be suitable.

Getting this right is half the battle won.
